Nato Agreement Countries

On 4 March 1947, the Treaty of Dunkirk was signed by France and the United Kingdom as a treaty of alliance and mutual assistance in the event of a possible attack by Germany or the Soviet Union after the Second World War. In 1948, this alliance was extended to the Benelux countries in the form of the Western Union, also known as the organisation of the Brussels Treaty (BTO) created by the Brussels Treaty. [9] Discussions on a new military alliance, which could include North America, culminated on 4 April 1949 in the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty by the Western Union member states, as well as by the United States, Canada, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. [10] On 29 March, NATO formally integrated Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia in its largest enlargement to date. Membership was the fifth since the creation of the Alliance and brought its membership to 26 countries. Membership was followed on 2 April by a flag ceremony. Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer had asked the seven countries to become members on 2 March, after each of NATO`s 19 member countries informed the United States of the adoption of protocols annexed to the North Atlantic Treaty. But they disagree on missile defense. Russia has opposed the deployment of NATO`s missile defence system near its border, but is in favour of deploying a common interoperability system.

NATO, on the other hand, insists on two independent systems that exchange information. NATO Secretary General Fogh Rasmussen said the agreement on the issue should be concluded within one year. On 4 July, the 29 nations of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) met in Sochi to reaffirm their commitment to cooperation in safe zones of common interest and in the field of missile defence. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen took over the presidency. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov also attended. Topics of the meeting included missile defence, counter-terrorism cooperation, military interaction between Afghanistan, the Winter Olympics and UN security resolutions in Libya in 1970 and 1973. The Secretary-General stressed that NATO “is not a competitor, but a partner that Russia can trust.” On 25 February, the NATO Secretary General welcomed the agreement reached between the UN Secretary-General and Iraq on a diplomatic solution to the Iraqi crisis. He stressed the importance of granting immediate and unconditional access to UNSCOM`s arms inspectors, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

On 16 December 2002, the European Union (EU) signed a comprehensive set of agreements with NATO under the Berlin Plus agreement. This agreement gave the EU the opportunity to use NATO`s assets in case it wanted to act independently in the event of an international crisis, provided THAT NATO itself did not want to act – the so-called “right to first refusal”. [109] Thus, Article 42, paragraph 7, of the 1982 Lisbon Treaty states that “when a Member State is the victim of armed attacks on its territory, the other Member States and all the Nade in their power have an obligation to assist and assist”. The treaty applies worldwide to certain areas, while NATO, in accordance with Article 6, is limited to operations north of the Tropic of Cancer. It provides a “double framework” for EU countries, which are also linked to the PfP programme. [Quote required] As a result, the September 2014 NATO summit focused on Russian aggression. President Putin has promised to create a “new Russia” in the eastern region of Ukraine. President Obama has promised to defend countries like Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Of the 30 member countries, two are in North America (Canada and the United States), 28 in Europe, including one (Turkey) in Europe and Asia.
